The Complete Website SEO Checklist for Small Businesses

SEO can feel overwhelming when every article seems to reference a different set of best practices. In reality, for most small business websites, ranking well comes down to getting a manageable list of fundamentals right. Here’s the complete checklist.

On-page fundamentals

  • Unique title tag on every page, ideally 30-60 characters, including your primary keyword naturally
  • Unique meta description on every page, 50-160 characters, written to earn the click (not just describe the page)
  • Single H1 heading per page that clearly states the page’s topic
  • Logical heading hierarchy — H2s and H3s that don’t skip levels
  • Descriptive alt text on every meaningful image (skip purely decorative ones)
  • Canonical URL set to avoid duplicate content issues

Technical foundations

  • robots.txt present and not accidentally blocking pages you want indexed
  • sitemap.xml present and submitted to Google Search Console
  • HTTPS/SSL enabled site-wide
  • Mobile-friendly — responsive layout, readable text without zooming, adequately sized tap targets
  • Fast page load — see our website speed guide for specifics
  • No broken internal links

Structured data (schema.org)

Structured data helps Google understand your content well enough to show rich results — star ratings, FAQ dropdowns, business details — directly in search results.

  • Organization or LocalBusiness schema on your homepage
  • FAQPage schema on pages with genuine FAQ content
  • BreadcrumbList schema for clear site navigation
  • Article schema on blog posts

Content quality

  • Every page has genuinely unique content — not a copy-pasted template with only the location or service name changed
  • Content directly answers what someone searching that term actually wants to know
  • Service pages are specific — a dedicated page per core service outperforms one page trying to cover everything

Local SEO (if you serve a local area)

  • Google Business Profile claimed, fully completed, and actively maintained
  • NAP consistency — your name, address and phone number match exactly across your website, Google Business Profile and any directory listings
  • Dedicated location pages if you genuinely serve multiple distinct towns or areas
  • Reviews displayed on-site and actively collected

Off-page and ongoing

  • Genuine backlinks from relevant, reputable sites (quality over quantity)
  • Regular content updates — a stale site with no activity in years is a weaker signal than one showing ongoing activity
  • Monitoring via Google Search Console for crawl errors and search performance
